Turning Off One Palworld Setting Will Save You A Lot Of Headache

Palworld can be frustrating, but it doesn’t always have to be. Here’s how to make Palworld easier and more fun with the click of a button.

Summary

  • Turning off Palworld's structure deterioration allows players to build bigger and more complicated structures without worry of them falling apart over time.
  • Zero deterioration can help with base defense, by allowing players to build a retaining wall outside the base's borders, protecting against hostile takeovers.
  • Deterioration doesn't add much to Palworld's mechanics and can detract from the joys of building, making it beneficial to turn off.

Palworld can be stressful, but it doesn't have to be. For one thing, the monster-collecting, base-building game relies heavily on severely flawed Pal AI, which the player has little ability to control. As a result, it has endless potential for frustration: accidental killing of wild Pals, Pals getting stuck in weird behaviors, or even Pals eating the fried egg a player was saving for later.

But while a player can't always control what their Pals do, it turns out they can temper some of Palworld’s frustrations with the click of a button. There's a single setting that, once turned off, opens up infinite possibilities and makes a vital part of gameplay much simpler. Here's what it is, and why it's worth changing.

Turning Off Palworld’s Deterioration Setting Makes Building Easier

Hidden deep within Palworld’s difficulty settings is an option called “Structure deterioration rate” that, once turned off, makes the game much easier. Deterioration affects all structures outside the player's base, causing them to degrade and eventually fall apart over time. This applies to anything a player might build outside their borders: a chest near a gathering point, a set of stairs to get over a hill, a bridge over a wide river. Turning off deterioration allows players to build bigger and more complicated structures anywhere, without worry of them disappearing overnight. This greatly expands opportunities for creative building.

Deterioration rate can only be changed before loading a save file. From the World Select menu, choose a world, then click on " Change World Settings " at the bottom of the screen. Scroll to " Structure deterioration rate ," and turn the slider down to zero to remove this mechanic from the game.

How Zero Deterioration Can Help With Palworld Base Defense

And even though it doesn't affect structures built within bases, deterioration can make defending them harder. It takes several upgrade levels before players are allowed to build a second Palworld base, and bases are strictly limited in size. The base's center is determined by the placement of the Palbox that established it. Structures take up a lot of space, so players have to economize on unnecessary improvements. A protective wall around a base doesn't seem like a bad idea, but it can eat into surface area that would otherwise be used for resource gathering, Pal beds, or workbenches.

So, the most logical solution is to build a wall just outside the base's borders. That seems to work, until the wall becomes damaged by deterioration and a Mammorest comes crashing through like the Kool-Aid Man. With deterioration turned off, this worry is a thing of the past. Players can build a retaining wall as far out from the main base as they like. Players can't guarantee that no Pals will spawn inside, but as long as they keep their walls off the big roaming bosses' paths, they're likely to avoid any hostile takeovers.

Deterioration is a common feature in survival games, often serving to stress the importance of resource conservation and regular maintenance. However, it doesn't add much to Palworld's unique mechanics, and can detract from the joys of building. As a result, there's no good reason for anyone but the most hardcore players to leave it on. Palworld can be played more freely, and enjoyed more thoroughly, with deterioration turned off.
